Hard surface calculations are becoming trickier and tricker to solve for homeowners that desire a larger entertaining space or remodel. It’s partly for a good reason, due to moving water correctly through space so it doesn’t end up in basements, rivers, creeks, sewer drains, etc. We are always looking and investigating new ways to reduce that hard surface number, but still get the same impact with a beautiful and functional design. Permeable Pavers have been a game changer for that!
Lake Minnetonka, Wayzata, MN
This home was literally built on the edge of Lake Minnetonka! It was a property that had been grandfathered in and the homeowners did a large remodel. They wanted to update the surrounding property but since it was so close to the water there was very minimal hardcover we could use. So, for the driveway we decided to use a paver from the Rejuvenate Permeable Pavers from County Materials.
Here is an image of the landscape plan. You can see how close it is to the water!
H2O Pro Pavers and Rejuvenate Permeable Concrete Pavers are designed to direct storm water through paver joints, directly into the ground. These paver systems can help improve water quality by capturing contaminants and suspended solids typically found in storm water and filtering them through layers of aggregates. Permeable pavers help maximize land use, as they can replace traditional retention and detention ponds.
This is a close up of how we install permeable pavers (*Note: These are very brief instructions, please see the companies guide lines and directions)
Step One: Excavate the are down about 6″
Step Two: Install base open grade aggregate
Step Three: Install an edge restraint (typically concrete or plastic edger)
Step Four: Install and compact crushed base aggregate
Step Five: Install permeable paver with gap for filtering
*NOTE: You can not brush polymeric sand or any binding agents in-between the pavers. You need water to flow between each paver.
Step One: Excavation of Area
Step Two & Three: Installing Base and Edger
Step Four: Installing Permeable Pavers
